1 Herbert, A. P. Mild and Bitter
London Methuen & Co., Ltd. 1944 Fourth Edition Hard Cover Very Good Minus Very Good Minus
Tan cloth, dark brown-stamped lettering on spine and front, x, 275pp. Dust jacket with photo of author on front panel, list of additional works on back panel. The book spine has slight lean (cocked), with firm binding, has a light bump to spine ends, and corners -- which have sharp tips, slight bump to front cover fore edge, text is essentially bright and clean -- except as noted, following. Dust jacket is lightly faded, has a noticeable chip at the spine top with about 1/4" loss but all lettering is intact, small smudge on back panel, protected in a new Gaylord brand archival clear plastic cover (removable). Obviously a relic of World War Two, with the stamp "Officers Mess, R.A.F. Ouston, Newcastle-On-Tyne." applied generously as follows: twice to the recto of the front free endpaper, the verso of the last leaf and the verso of the back free endpaper, and once to the front pastedown, both sides of the flyleaf, the first half-title page, page v. Acknowledgement, page vii Contents, page [ix] second half-title, and the top margin of page one. From the dust jacket: "Mild and Bitter is a mixture dear to many in Britain, and though this is not a book about beer, the description fits the mood of this most miscellaneous miscellany. There are verse, prose, parodies, essays and stage-work, pure nonsense and serious fun . . ." According to Wikipedia, RAF Ouston was home to several fighter squadrons throughout WWII, flying Hurricanes, Spitfires and several other types including the American Mustang. It is now Albemarle Barracks and home of 39th Regiment Royal Artillery, and many of the WWII buildings survive.
