1 Milam, B. J. The Honest Farmer from Arkansaw on a Lark Seein' the West
1905 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Privately Printed
Original red cloth, gilt-stamped lettering on spine, gilt-stamped lettering within blind-stamped decoration on front, 344, [1] pp. incl. frontispiece, illustrated with numerous plates from photographs, included in pagination, n.publ, n.pl., privately published. Spine ends & corners lightly bumped, spine very lightly sunned, two small bean-sized faint light spots on front, a similar more evident spot on back, edges faded, first three leaves are pulled at the top and partially broken from the gutter else text is bright, crisp & clean. A rare and quite interesting account of Oklahoma and the West at the dawn of the 20th century, told in a series of letters from Burt James Milam to his wife Mollie. Milam traveled to Fort Sill, Indian Territory, in July, 1901, anxious to lay claim to some of the homestead lands. Not satisfied with immediate settlement, however, Milam continued his travels through the West, visiting Corpus Christi, Galveston, Boise (spelled Boyce), St. Louis, and many other locales. His interaction with his fellow travelers, residents of the areas visited, the Native American inhabitants, and others are superbly recorded, as are his observations of American culture at a time of profound change. His keen sense of history adds great depth to his descriptions, and the marvelous selection of photographs brings them alive. These include many of American Indians; Green River, Wyoming; a bull-fighting stadium in Juarez, Old Mexico; San Pedro Creek in San Antonio; etc.
