Potter, [Beatrix] The Story of Peter Rabbit Chicago [and] New York Reilly and Britton Co. Hard Cover Good No Jacket John R. Neill Edition Uncertain. Peter Rabbit. Dick Whittington. Volume I in The Children's Red Books series. Red boards, black lettering on gray panel outlined in black on spine, title in gray lettering outlined in black on front, "Potter" in black lettering, oval color lithograph affixed within ornate bordering, color illustrated endpapers of charactors within books in the series, 48pp +3pp ads., c.1908 by publisher. Very early printing with book ads listing Baum books only through John Dough and the Cherub (1906). Ms. Potter is credited with last name only on the cover but not on the title page. (Publisher's unique pagination, counting the cover as page one.) Page six lists 12 books in the seriies. Condition: Top 1/2" of spine lacking backstrip, bottom bumped, the word "of" in title on spine scratched out, corners lightly bumped with tips rubbed to boards, light rubbing and fading over-all on boards, edges faded, p.2, the front pastedown has a couple of small dark spots, p.3, the front free endpaper has a shallow 1" V-shaped scratch, p.5 This Book Belongs To is completed in pencil with two children's names & addresses (with addresses a few houses apart -- perhaps close friends who shared the book?), the balance of the text is very lightly agetoned to an offwhite and is quite crisp & clean with occasional very light thumb smudging in the margin, protected in a new archival glassine dust jacket. Beatrix Potter self-published 450 copies after having the manuscript refused by every childrens book publisher in England. In 1902 Frederick Warne published the first color edition. The second story in this volume, Dick Wittington and His Cat, is actually based on the Lord Mayor of London of that name who served three terms from 1397 to 1420. The story was first recorded in 1605 and a play was produced in 1606. Price:
