Compton-Burnett, Ivy Brothers and Sisters New York Zero Press 1956 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Green cloth, gray cloth backstrip, dark green lettering on spine, [vi], 273pp. First American Edition. Includes the specially commissioned 10pp booklet INTRODUCTION TO THE FIRST AMERICAN EDITION by Asa Benveniste. Also includes a newspaper clipping of the review of Ms. Compton-Burnett's postumously published, The Last and The First. Square, tight binding, spine bottom lightly bumped, corners have sharp tips although those of the front cover are lightly bumped, edges lightly faded, text is bright, crisp & clean, previous owner's name inked to front free endpaper which has some fading from the laid in newsprint clipping. Dust jacket is wholly intact, spine panel is moderately faded with a few tiny splits on top, protected in a new Gaylord-brand archival clear plastic cover (removable). Brothers and Sisters was originally published in England in 1929, is her third novel and the second in her mystery series of 19 "serious" works. Mr. Benveniste begins his review thusly: Novelists and playwrights have always been tempted by the closed situation, that is, by the confinement of several characters, in a particular place out of which there is no escape, thus providing full scope for complete exporation of the emotions under the most apalling of conditions of restraint. One such place is Hell, in the theological sense; another is the family. Miss Compton-Burnett has chosen the latter for her particular kind of exploration, a situation as closed, terrible and fraught with violence as Hell itself . . . Price:
