1 Carr, Jolyon Murder in the Dispensary
Hassocks UK Post Mortem Books, Ralph Spurrier, Publisher 1999 0953144631 / 9780953144631 Hard Cover Fine No Jacket
Author aka Edith Pargeter or Ellis Peters. Blue cloth, gilt-stamped lettering on spine and on front with illustration, pale yellow linen weave endpapers, title page in two colors, 311pp. FIRST THUS, Limited Edition of 350 copies, of which this is No. 5. SIGNED BY THE PUBLISHER. Bright, crisp, clean, square, sharp corners, very slight bump to spine bottom, front board very slightly bowed; appears unread. From the publisher's Foreword: '"Edith. Who was Jolyon Carr?" I had paused, whilst scanning the library shelves of Edith Pargeter, at a set of four books which to judge by the prices on the dustwrappers had been published in the late 30's or early 40's. All four had been published by Herbert Jenkins and the titles appeared to have criminous elements to them. The author of the four books was a Jolyon Carr, a name I had not come across previously in my many years of handling crime fiction. "Oh. Jolyon Carr." Edith hesitated momentarily as if trying to conjure up why she would have them on her shelf. Her face lightened and a familiar puckish smile came to her lips. "Yes, well, that was me! I had forgotten all about them. Wrote them just before the war." She returned to the signing . . .' Here was one of the foremost crime fiction writers of the 80's owning up to having written four crime novels fifty years before . . . The text for this edition was taken from the author's own copy of the first edition of 1938 given to me shortly before she died. The front cover design used on this edition incorporates the main element of the artwork of Alex Jardine's dustjacket* to be found on the first edition. It shows a hand pouring out drops of a golden liquid from a dispensary bottle. The colour chosen for the binding is as close as could be found to the "poison" blue of the traditional dispensary bottles. *This edition was published without a dust jacket.
