Charlot, Jean PICTURE BOOK II 32 Original Lithographs and Captions (ALL Signed in Pencil) Los Angeles, California Zeitlin & Ver Brugge 1973 First Edition Soft Cover Near Fine Slip Case Near Fine Limited Edition Jean Charlot Signed by Author Tan wrappers, black lettering on spine and front, illustration on front which is an enlarged reverse of the monochromatic title page illustraton, unpaginated, with 32 original stone lithographs, publ date: May 10, 1973. Limited Edition of 1000 numbered and signed copies. This copy is Hors Commerce*. It is from the estate of Jack Lord**. All 32 of the original stone lithographs within are signed in pencil by the artist, as a personal favor to his friend, Mr. Lord -- in addition to his signature with inscription on the colophon page: "Hors Commerce / Jack Lord's own. With thanks for / his invaluable help. / ME KE ALOHA PUMEHANA A PAU / Jean Charlot" -- followed by the signature and inscription of the lithographer, "Lynton R. Kistler / with appreciation to Mr. Lord." The small monochromatic drawing (brown) on the title page is also signed in pencil. In front are laid-in two letters from the artist to Mr. Lord, and each is signed by Mr. Charlot. In the first letter, dated 2-28-1962 (11 years prior to eventual publication), Mr. Charlot indicates "I shall sign the prints for you." In the second letter, dated 8-27-73 (3 months after publication, Mr. Charlot indicates some annoyance at signing [all of the] individual prints! An autographed 8 x 10 color photo of Mr. Lord is also laid-in. Inserted in the slip case*** with the book is a 4 x 9 business envelope containing the following items of provenance: a signed 3-1/2 x 5-1/2 color photo of Mr. Lord, a cancelled check for a small amount on the account of Jack Lord and Marie Lord drawn on the Bank of Hawaii signed by Mr. Lord, a letter from the First Hawaiian Bank, personal trust dept., attesting that the book was the personal property of Mr. & Mrs. Lord, the PayPal receipt from the previous owner as high bidder in the eBay estate liquidation auction, August, 2007. The book spine appears lightly sunned; scattered light foxing on edges with occasional very light foxing on some margins, slip-case has light sunning along one edge of the opening, book and slip-case show some minor evidence of handling, but over-all obviously well cared for. *Hors Commerce: Presentation copy, outside of the edition of 1000 which were only signed on the colophon page. **Jack Lord, actor, is best known for his starring role as Steve McGarrett in the American television program Hawaii Five-O from 1968 to 1980. ***The slip case is covered with a single large printed sheet of paper with two special monochromatic illustrations.
