Brown cloth, gilt-stamped lettering on spine, deaply blind-embossed decoration on spine & covers, frontispiece illustration, xvi, 314pp. Spine has a couple of small light stains, covers lightly rubbed, back top corner rounded, edges lightly faded, name label on front pastedown, gift note dated "Sept. 8th, 1849" inked on front free endpaper else text white, crisp & clean. Text block has slight damp bends with consequent stiffness but no stains. A bit of scattered light foxing on a few of the first & last pages. Exceptionally fine portrait engraving of Foster under tissue on frontispiece. John Foster (1770-1843) was a noted English theologian.
