Beige cloth, dark brown lettering on spine & front, xiii including etching of Mr. Goodnight with facsimile signatures of artist & subject, plus two maps of the Southwest (by Thos. L. Jones) showing trails blazed by Mr. Goodnight, 485pp, bibliography, index, plus 100 small etchings by artist -- and a facsimile of the, infamous & indecipherable, two-page letter to fellow rancher J. F. (Spade) Evans about senator Matlock. Book has a slight spine lean, spine ends bumped, front top corner lightly bumped, front bottom corner has some slight wear with board showing through at tip, edges & endpapers faded, binding remains quite firm, text is bright & clean, except for the date "May 26" penciled to the front pastedown. One of the finest books on Southwest Americana, representing ten years of research and writing, "But still the story is incomplete," writes the author in his Preface entitled, Cutting for Sign. "Certain experiences in life seem to evade the written word. . . . I regret not the thousands of pages of unused notes in my files, and the reams of rejected though relevant material in libraries and archives. These are tangible and still available, while the missing qualities of rugged and vibrant personality that I cannot picture in my pages have passed with the dust of the Goodnight Trail." This writer would, respectfully, disagree. In this remarkable work, a very great many of the best of fabulous things of the time have been saved from the dust.
