1 Selby, Hubert, Jr. Last Exit to Brooklyn
London Calder & Boyars 1968 Second Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
[Stated Second Edition -- a somewhat scarce copy of the first post-trial edition to include the Anthony Burgess Introduction.] Maroon cloth, gilt-stamped lettering on spine, xxii, 234pp. Textual b/w dust jacket with title in the form of a subway sign -- with POST-TRIAL EDITION printed below.. "Foreword to the post-trial edition by the Publishers" "Introduction by Anthony Burgess." [Printed on title page] "Second edition September 1968." [Printed at center of copyright page -- ORIGINAL1966 COPYRIGHT DATA printed at top of page is BLOTTED OUT BY PUBLISHER.] Complete and unexpurgated. Bright, tight, square, sharp corners, top edges have a small coffee-spill stain, edges lightly faded, text bright, crisp, clean. Dust jacket is wholly intact, is bright & clean, has a fine stressline at each hinge, a tiny bit of colorchipping on spine ends, protected in a new Gaylord-brand archival clear plastic cover (removable). Few books have aroused so much strong feeling as this, with reactions ranging from the highest admiration through horror, pity and disgust to the blind fury of those who are opposed to the exposure of social evil. Primarily it is about the violence that besets a loveless society, an understanding of the causes of that violence, the motivations of the creators of it and the tragedy of those who must live within it. The book was found obscene at the Old Bailey (the Central Criminal Court in the UK) in November 1967, a decision which was reversed by an historic Appeal Court Judgement in July, 1968. This copy is from the estate of the American Poet and Prof. of Literature, Emil L. Dillard, and has his poem #178 "Hate & Winter" handwritten on the back free endpaper.
