Martin, who first settled in Kansas Territory in 1857, became a lifelong newspaperman, influential politician, and co-founder of the Kansas State Historical Society. The book is INITIALLED by him on his personal Kansas Library book label on the front pastedown, and also on the title page. Below Mr. Martin's booklabel is the Bookplate of The College of Emporia Anderson Memorial Library "Geo. W. Martin Kansas Collection," from which the book was deaccessed. Contemporary brown leather, spine divided into six panels with black-stamped double rules, gilt-stamped lettering on black panel near head, black-stamped double-ruled borders on covers, publisher's dark top edge dye, [ii], 334pp, index. Tight, square, small chip on spine head with old mended tiny split, hinges edges lightly rubbed, top corners sharp, bottom corners tips lightly rubbed, light abrasion evidence near front bottom corner, more obvious near back corner, edges faded, text bright, crisp, exceptionally clean, supple.
