1 Yates, Robert Secret Proceedings and Debates of the Convention Assembled at Phildelphia, in the Year 1787, for the Purpose of Forming the Constitution of The United States of America
Cincinnati OH Alston Mygatt 1838 Later Edition Full-Leather Good
Black leather, gilt-stamped lettering within gilt-stamped border & decoration on spine, ornate blind-stamped bording on covers, xii, 335pp, appendix. Spine square, headband lacking with bean-sized chip at top, 1" closed tear in the outer leather at the bottom of the front hinge, back bottom corner bumped, light wear to edges, foxing on endpapers, name pencilled on front free endpaper & inked in top margin of title page, light foxing throughout text but mostly in margins, edges faded, text bright, supple & quite readable. "From notes taken by the late Robert Yates, Esquire, Chief Justice of New York, and copied by John Lansing, Jun. Esquire, late Chancellor of that state, members of that convention. Including 'The Genuine Information,' laid before the Legislature of Maryland, by Luther Martin, Esquire, then Attorney-General of that state, and member of the same convention, also, other historical documents, relative to the Federal Compact of the North American Union." Robert Yates, John Lansing & Alexander Hamilton were the Consitutional Delegates from New York. Yates & Lansing were adamant States Rights supporters, while Hamilton was an equally adamant Federalist. Yates & Lansing left the Convention early and did not vote on its ratification. Also included in the book is their joint letter to the Governor of New York "containing their reasons for not subscribing to the Federal Constitution." They were honorable men. Yates retained his position as Attorney General and at the next assembly of a Grand Jury gave an impassioned address in support of the new Constitution, which address is also included in this most remarkable work on our nation's history.
