Milwaukee WI 1861 Hard Cover Good Plus Self Published Thomas Stephens Third Edition . . . comprising the Broad Sword Exercise for Cavalry and Artillery, and the Small Sword Cut and Thrust Practice for Infantry and Navy. To which are added Instructions on Horsemanship illustrated by Sixty Handsome and Effective Engravings, prepared and arranged by Thomas Stephens, Professor of Broad and Small Sword Exercises. Maroon pebbled cloth, with plain spine, abbreviated title gilt-stamped on front within decorative blank-stamped bordering, x, [11] to 116pp, profusely illustrated throughout with steel engravings. No Table of Contents, but the book is divided into six broad areas of study under the following headings, followed by four pages of Recommendations (i.e., testimonials): School of the Trooper Dismounted, Sword Exercise for Infantry and Navy, Cavalry Practice Dismounted, Post Practice, General Instructions, Military Equitation. Condition: Spine head rubbed with some loss & light tattering, foot rubbed, corners bumped with tips lightly rubbed, spine is cocked with front cover extending about 1/8" beyond back cover, not shelf-cocked as it will stand upright on head or foot edges, text edges lightly faded, a very light pencil inscription of the front free endpaper reads, "B. F. M. Eckron's Book" -- above a sketch of a bird carring a banner displaying the word "Union," four pages of one of the sewn text signatures (or gatherings) protrude slightly at the top & fore edge due to a broken thread, text is quite clean throughout, bright white & supple. One of the very few manuals available at the time on sword fighting, the Second Revised Edition appeared early in 1861, and was subsequently revised again by Colonel (later, General) Stephens, in the Third Edition specifically for the Civil War, to include training for Artillery and Navy personel.
